Tt is amazing that we hear so much spoken about the new birth from Bible students, denominational
leaders, Theologians, Evangelists and Pastors telling people how to be born again.
Perhaps you have heard at some time or another many explanations concerning being born again. It seems as though these various groups refuse to get down to the facts of Eternal Life.
Jesus did not try to appease Nicodemus, but rather he came directly to the point. We find that so many of our religious leaders today stay away from Jesus' profound statement pertaining to "the way to get to heaven." They find it more desirable to stay along denominational lines and they refuse to bend.
The Bible tells us, "heaven and earth shall pass away, but God's word will abide forever." Nicodemus came to Jesus by night and said unto him, "Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God, for no man can do these miracles thou doest, except God be with him." Jesus answered and said unto him "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." Nicodemus said unto him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter the second time into his mother's womb and be born?"
Jesus answered and said unto him, "Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again."
Yes, the Spirit that Jesus is talking about is the Holy Spirit. John the Baptist testified of this saying, "And I knew him not; but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending and remaining on him, the same is he which baptized with the Holy Ghost" (St. John 1:33).
Again, Jesus speaking, "For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence." On the day of Pentecost, in the upper room, the one hundred twenty (120) were filled with the Holy Ghost and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance (Acts 2:4).
Also the Apostle Paul said, speaking to the disciples of John the Baptist who had received the water baptism, "Have you received the Holy Ghost since you believed?" (Acts 19:2). And they said unto him, "We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost." And he said unto them, "Unto what then were ye baptized?"
Then said Paul, "John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus."
When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them; and they spoke with tongues and prophesied (Acts 19:3-6).
Thus, it happened nearly two thousand years ago and still happens to this very day. This is what Jesus spoke of to Nicodemus concerning being born of the water and "THE SPIRIT"!
